As you may have expected, Elena and Jon weren’t looking for love when they started their Wordle TikTok pages.

At the time, there were quite a few people making content of them playing the New York Times word games, so it wasn’t too surprising that their videos eventually crossed paths. But while Elena was quick to give Jon a follow, Jon took a little more convincing. Feeling high and mighty with his few hundred followers, he’d initially scrolled right past Elena’s account, worried she’d reach out wanting to collab.

When he finally did follow her back, Elena did reach out, but it wasn’t about a collab. She’d noticed that Jon’s videos weren’t the most high quality (ouch) and reached out to recommend the free screen recording software that she used for hers. After a few back-and-forth messages and a little bit of small talk, the two went their separate ways.

That is, until Elena reached out just a few days later to see if Jon had taken her up on the suggestion. He had, and the two got back to the small talk.

They never stopped talking after that. What started as a polite, high-level conversation slowly turned into a real chat between friends. Despite growing up an ocean and 7 time zones apart, the two realized they had a lot in common, and it seemed like there was more and more to discuss every day.

Elena and Jon did eventually collab for a video. (Although, Jon had insisted that Elena reach 500 followers before he’d been willing to do so. She did, but she later told Jon she’d bought some of them to reach the limit. Romantic!) It was the first time they’d video called each other, and it kicked off a series of regular calls between the two that would quickly become the highlight of both of their days.

There’s still some debate on which one of the two developed feelings for the other first and when, but the next big development came on Halloween in 2023. Jon was out with friends and had admittedly had a bit too much to drink, and Elena had just woken up for the day. After texting back and forth a bit, Jon admitted that he really liked Elena, and she told him she felt the same way.

But naturally, having a crush on someone halfway across the world isn’t easy. For one, they had to break the news to everyone around them while trying not to sound crazy, which wasn’t easy. Then, they had to figure out how they were going to meet up in real life, since it didn’t make much sense to begin dating if they hadn’t met in person yet.

The answer came when the following February, Elena did something crazy: she flew all the way from Zurich to Chicago to see Jon. The two both remember the first few minutes of their in-person time together as some of the most awkward moments of their entire lives. (To this day, Elena recalls thinking “what have I gotten myself into?”) But after the ice had broken a bit on the car ride back to Milwaukee, they remembered how to be normal and fell back into the comfortable patterns they’d created virtually during the months prior.

The week felt like a blur. On top of it being their first time together in person, it was just Elena’s second time in the United States overall. She’d also happened to pick Super Bowl weekend to visit, meaning she spent one night crammed into Jon and his roommates’ on-campus housing with a large crowd of rowdy young men, most of whom were adamantly cheering against the Chiefs, the only team she knew anything about (thank you, Taylor Swift).

But other than that, the first meeting went swimmingly. After spending as much time together as possible, getting to know each other further and realizing they really did like each other as much as they’d thought. Elena and Jon decided they’d set the official starting date of their relationship as February 10th, the first full day they ever spent together in person.

Then, in May that year, a miracle happened. Elena’s family had registered the U.S. green card lottery the previous October, a drawing where she, her mom and her dad each had just around a 1% chance of being selected. But surprisingly, in just their first year in the program, Elena’s dad was one of the just 42 Swiss citizens selected. Because she was still under 21 at the time, this meant Elena would be allowed to apply for and obtain a green card herself, giving her legal access to the United States that she otherwise would’ve likely needed to obtain through getting engaged or married to Jon.

In the following months after the exciting news, the two continued making regular trips to visit each other when possible. Highlights included Elena’s visit to Madison, WI for nearly 2 full months in the summer of 2024 and Jon’s trip out to Switzerland that October, where he spent the anniversary of the date he’d first confessed his feelings for Elena passing Halloween candy out to kids saying “süsses oder saures!” as they stopped at her parents’ house.

Then, despite a few delays in the process that kept the couple fearing whether Elena would really be able to obtain her green card before her 21st birthday, the couple finally found out that it would be possible after all. Jon made one more trip out to Switzerland in March 2025 to help Elena make the official move to the United States. After a long flight travelling with 8 suitcases plus carry-ons, the two could officially call the same continent home for the first time.

Since then, Elena has settled into her life in the U.S., and the change from long-distance to no distance simply helped the couple’s love for each other grow even further. On April 26, 2026, just one day shy of one year and one month from Elena’s big move, Jon asked her to marry him under a canopy of budding green and pink leaves at Period Garden Park in Madison.

Da quel momento non smisero più di parlare. Quella che era iniziata come una conversazione educata e superficiale si trasformò lentamente in un vero dialogo tra amici. Nonostante fossero cresciuti separati da un oceano e da sette fusi orari, i due si resero conto di avere moltissimo in comune, e sembrava che ogni giorno ci fosse sempre qualcosa di nuovo di cui parlare.

Elena e Jon finirono davvero per collaborare a un video. (Anche se Jon aveva insistito che Elena raggiungesse i 500 follower prima di accettare. Lei ci riuscì, ma più tardi confessò a Jon di averne comprati alcuni per raggiungere il traguardo. Romantico!) Fu la prima volta che si videro in videochiamata, e diede inizio a una serie di chiamate regolari che sarebbero presto diventate il momento preferito della giornata per entrambi.

C’è ancora qualche discussione su chi dei due abbia sviluppato per primo dei sentimenti e quando sia successo, ma la svolta successiva arrivò ad Halloween del 2023. Jon era fuori con amici e aveva decisamente bevuto un po’ troppo, mentre Elena si era appena svegliata. Dopo essersi scritti per un po’, Jon ammise che gli piaceva davvero Elena, e lei gli disse di provare la stessa cosa.

Naturalmente, avere una cotta per qualcuno che vive dall’altra parte del mondo non è semplice. Prima di tutto, dovettero dare la notizia a chi avevano intorno cercando di non sembrare completamente pazzi, cosa non facile. Poi dovettero capire come incontrarsi nella vita reale, dato che iniziare una relazione senza essersi mai visti di persona non sembrava avere molto senso.

La risposta arrivò il febbraio seguente, quando Elena fece qualcosa di folle: volò da Zurigo fino a Chicago per vedere Jon. Entrambi ricordano i primi minuti insieme di persona come alcuni dei momenti più imbarazzanti delle loro vite. (Ancora oggi, Elena ricorda di aver pensato: “In cosa mi sono cacciata?”) Ma dopo aver rotto un po’ il ghiaccio durante il viaggio in macchina verso Milwaukee, tornarono a essere sé stessi e ritrovarono la naturalezza e la complicità che avevano costruito nei mesi precedenti a distanza.

Quella settimana passò in un lampo. Oltre a essere la loro prima volta insieme di persona, era solo la seconda volta in assoluto che Elena visitava gli Stati Uniti. Inoltre, aveva scelto proprio il weekend del Super Bowl per venire, il che significò passare una serata stipata nell’appartamento universitario di Jon e dei suoi coinquilini insieme a un gruppo di ragazzi rumorosi, quasi tutti intenti a tifare contro i Chiefs, l’unica squadra di cui lei sapesse qualcosa (grazie, Taylor Swift).

A parte questo, il primo incontro andò meravigliosamente. Dopo aver passato insieme più tempo possibile, conoscendosi ancora meglio e rendendosi conto che si piacevano davvero quanto avevano immaginato, Elena e Jon decisero di fissare l’inizio ufficiale della loro relazione al 10 febbraio, il primo giorno intero trascorso insieme di persona.

Poi, nel maggio di quell’anno, accadde un miracolo. La famiglia di Elena si era iscritta alla lotteria per la green card americana nell’ottobre precedente, un’estrazione in cui lei, sua madre e suo padre avevano ciascuno circa l’1% di possibilità di essere selezionati. Sorprendentemente, già al primo anno, il padre di Elena fu uno dei soli 42 cittadini svizzeri scelti. Poiché Elena non aveva ancora compiuto 21 anni, questo significava che anche lei avrebbe potuto richiedere e ottenere una green card, dandole la possibilità legale di vivere negli Stati Uniti senza dover necessariamente ottenere un visto tramite fidanzamento o matrimonio con Jon.

Nei mesi successivi a questa notizia emozionante, i due continuarono a fare viaggi regolari per vedersi quando possibile. Tra i momenti più belli ci furono la visita di Elena a Madison, Wisconsin, per quasi due mesi nell’estate del 2024 e il viaggio di Jon in Svizzera quell’ottobre, durante il quale trascorse l’anniversario del giorno in cui aveva confessato i suoi sentimenti distribuendo dolcetti di Halloween ai bambini davanti alla casa dei genitori di Elena, dicendo “Süsses oder Saures!”.

Poi, nonostante alcuni ritardi nel processo che fecero temere alla coppia che Elena non sarebbe riuscita a ottenere la green card prima del suo ventunesimo compleanno, arrivò finalmente la conferma che tutto sarebbe stato possibile. Jon fece un ultimo viaggio in Svizzera nel marzo del 2025 per aiutare Elena a trasferirsi ufficialmente negli Stati Uniti. Dopo un lunghissimo viaggio con otto valigie più i bagagli a mano, i due poterono finalmente dire di vivere sullo stesso continente per la prima volta.

Da allora, Elena si è ambientata nella sua nuova vita negli Stati Uniti, e il passaggio da una relazione a distanza a una vita insieme ha fatto crescere ancora di più il loro amore. Il 26 aprile 2026, a un giorno esatto da un anno e un mese dal grande trasferimento di Elena, Jon le ha chiesto di sposarlo sotto un canopy di foglie verdi e rosa appena sbocciate al Period Garden Park di Madison.

Anche se la loro storia è tutt’altro che convenzionale, Elena e Jon non cambierebbero nemmeno un momento del loro percorso. Non vedono l’ora di celebrare il loro amore con voi!
